Top 3 Reasons Cats Pee Outside the Litter Box

At Coyote Ridge Veterinary Clinic, we see numerous reasons why a cat may stop using the litter box, but the top 3 reasons we see on a regular basis include stress, crystals and UTIs. Cats can be affected by even small changes in their environments that cause them undue stress. Both male and female cats can develop crystals that irritate their urethra and cause them stress. In male cats this condition can become life threatening if a plug of crystals blocks their ability to urinate. Female cats are overrepresented when it comes to UTIs due to their urinary anatomy.

At our new veterinary clinic in Fort Collins, one of the most helpful samples we collect is a urine sample from these cats. We can run a urine sample right away in our in-house laboratory. This can show us if inflammation, infection, crystals or all the above are present in your cat’s urine. Based on these results, the history taking and the physical exam findings we work with our clients to help mitigate the unwanted behavior. If your cat is having problems using the litter box call us today at 970-663-7387 or book an appointment online using the link below.
